5 Easy Crafts for Kids

Every teacher needs some ideas for easy crafts for kids.

Admittedly, when you're working with very young kids, if you want something that's going to look really nice, you're going to have to do some of the prep work on your own.

I don't always have time to do this. So when I want something quick and easy, that doesn't require any preparation, here are the 5 things that I always fall back on.

Easy Crafts for Kids

1. Painting with an alternative paintbrush. Instead of giving kids paintbrushes to use, have them use something that's a little more surprising. Cotton balls, Q-tips, crumpled up paper, sponges, and wooden sticks are all fun to work with and give a very different look to the finished piece.

2. Make a "Feelie Book". This is a great idea because it spans a few days, teaches kids about different textures, and is a good thing to send home to the parents. On each day, have the kids glue a different object to a piece of paper. Cotton balls might be "soft". Popsicle sticks might be "hard". Sand might be "rough". Collect these as they finish them. After you have done all of the pages you want, create a book called a "Feelie Book". Label all of the pages with their proper texture and bind them all together using yarn.

3. Rainbow Crayons. Group three or four crayons together using a rubber band. Then let the kids draw on paper with this. It creates a rainbow effect where the kids are using all of the colors with just one stroke.

4. Mixing Colors. On each child's paper put a small bit of two of the primary colors. Let the kids experiment by painting and as the colors mix, point out to them that a new color is being made. Kids like this and think that it's "magic".

5. Coloring Pages. It's always a good idea to have some coloring pages lying around. Kids can then use crayons, markers, or colored pencils to color them in. Each of these different tools gives a different look to the picture, so let them experiment.
