The Fishing Game

Admittedly, the Fishing Game can take a bit of time to prepare. But once you've prepared for it, you can play it any time. To prepare, you must make small cards with each of the letters on it. You may be able to use regular flash cards, but I find that they are often too heavy and the magnets won't pick them up. Attach a paper clip to each of the cards. Then, make a fishing rod out of a stick, string, and a magnet. Sometimes you can buy a fishing rod like this at the dollar store. It's worth the investment.

THE FISHING GAME

Target English: ABCs and phonics
Things You Need: special ABC flash cards with paper clips attached, fishing pole with magnet
Age: 4 or older
English Level: low-high

Game Outline:
1. Designate an area of the classroom to be the "pond". Spread the ABC cards upside down in the pond.
2. Give a student the fishing rod and let them "fish" one of the letters out of the pond.
3. Once they have a letter, they must say the letter and a word that begins with the letter.

Variations

  • Young children, or new learners, may only say the name of the letter.
  • You can use card other than ABCs.
  • More advanced students may be able to fish out many letters and make a word. To do this you may want to set up separate vowel and consonant ponds.

Hope you and your kids have fun with this game.

Love,
Shannon Sensei
