Painted Fish!

Painted fish are a fun way to incorporate a "sea" theme into your crafts. They look pretty cute and by having the paper in a fish shape, they look a bit more polished than using a plain piece of paper.

Materials Needed:

  • white construction paper cut into the shape of a fish
  • red, yellow, and blue paint
  • paint trays
  • sponges

Preparation
Cut fish shapes out of white construction paper.
This took about 10 minutes for my class of 12.

In Class

  • Put two colors of paint into each tray so that they are slightly touching, but not fully mixed.
  • Give each student their fish, a sponge, and a paint tray (Students can share paint trays.).
  • Show them how to dip their sponges into the paint so that there is a bit of each color on the sponge. If possible, try to make sure that the paint does not get mixed too much.
  • Let them stamp their fish with the sponges. If you want the colors on the fish not to blend too much, make sure you take it away before it gets to that point. Give the student a new piece of paper that they can continue to paint on.
  • If you want, draw eyes, mouth, and/or gills on the fish with a black marker after the paint has dried.

Some students like painting more than others, so I always like to have extra paper on hand so that they can keep painting even after the first project is "finished".
