Space Craft -- Alien
If you know of a cuter space craft, please let me know.
But I'm pretty sure that this is one of the cutest things we've ever done. I recently discovered that the kids do pretty well with following step-by-step instructions. We've got a space craft theme going on in September, so I decided to make up all the pieces for this alien and have them put him together. I was afraid that they would think he's scary. But they thought he was cute too.
Materials Needed:
- green construction paper
- black construction paper
- glue
Preparation
Before class, you must cut out all the pieces for the alien--head, eyes, body, arms, legs.
This took about 30 minutes to prepare for 12 students.
In Class
- Pass out the head and the eyes.
- Clearly demonstrate to the children how to glue the eyes on the face. Make sure that everyone has done this before moving on to the next step.
- Pass out the bodies and show them how to glue the head to the body.
- Pass out the arms and legs and show them how to glue them on as well.
If you want a craft of this sort to look nice, then you have to make sure that you take each step slowly and don't proceed to the next one until everyone has completed that step.
I picked my favorite examples to show on the site. I particularly like how the one at the top looks like he's walking and saying "Hello!". And then the one below is super cute with his arm and leg reversed.
Variations
I chose to make a more traditional alien. It works best for my kids if they have a set of simple instructions to follow and a goal of what it should look like. If you have slightly older students you can make variations in colors and body parts. It could have 3 eyes or 5 legs for example.
