Space Craft -- Magic Stars

This is a really fun space craft for the kids. They will think that it's "magic".

Magic Stars Magic Stars

Materials needed:

  • white construction paper
  • white wax crayon
  • black tempura paint
  • water
  • small paint containers
  • paintbrushes

Preparation
Before class, the teacher should draw stars on the white paper using the white crayon.
This took me about 10 minutes to prepare for a class of 12 students.

In Class

  • In the small paint containers, mix the black tempura paint with a bit of water.
  • Pass out the paper (with stars drawn on it) to the students and explain that it is "magic" paper.
  • Pass out the paint and the paintbrushes and let the kids paint on the paper. As they paint, the white stars will start to show through, appearing as if by magic.

To be honest, when we made these I added a bit too much water to the paint. It seemed to test fine when I was first doing it, but it ended up drying to a more purple color. So I suppose it looks more like "Stars at Dusk" or something. I recommend only using a splash of water when mixing. If you're extra anal, test beforehand and see how it dries.
