The Walking Around Game

The Walking Around Game is a versatile ESL game in that it can be played at any time throughout the lesson, for any length of time. You don't even have to prepare for it!

I tend to use this game when I notice the kids are getting a bit antsy during lesson time. It helps them to get their energy out so that they can focus later on.

THE WALKING AROUND GAME

Target English: any which can incorporate flash cards
Things You Need:flash cards, CD, CD player
Age: 2 or older
English Level: low-high

Game Outline:
1. Lay out the flash cards on the floor in a random manner.
2. As you play music, students must walk around the cards.
3. When the music stops, students must grab the nearest card and tell it to the teacher, using the target English.
Make sure the students are actually taking the card that's nearest to them and not just a card that they know or which is a favorite word.
4. Have students put the cards back on the floor and repeat.

Variations

  • To make this easy, students need only say the word that's on the card. To make it harder, students must use the word in a sentence.
  • Instead of walking, have students jump, run, swim, or even act like different animals.

Hope you and your kids have fun with this game.

Love,
Shannon Sensei
